Sam Pike

"The DofE Hillary Award taught me invaluable life lessons to aim high and persevere in the face of difficulty."

Sam completed his gold in 2015 from Fielding High School, he participated in a wide range of activities that made his Award experience unique. As Vice-President (Head Boy) of the Fielding High School Council this is a great achievement. A Sectional breakdown of Sam's Award is:

  • Service: Manawatu Youth Ambassador
  • Adventurous Journey: Expedition in the Harpers Pass area
  • Skill: Film Club - Film Production
  • Physical: Swimming
  • Residential: Spirit of Adventure - Youth Development Voyage

What Sam had to say about gaining his Gold Award:

"The Duke of Edinburgh’sHillary GOLD Award was an enriching journey of self-discovery and adventure. I reached heights well beyond my own expectations as character building challenges tested limits and pushed me outside my comfort zone. Along the way I made lasting friendships, mastered invaluable new skills and learnt a lot about myself. I came to realise I am more determined and resilient than I ever imagined. I have gained so much confidence and now understand that giving of oneself to others will always come back tenfold. Volunteering has not only been enriching and rewarding but also opened many doors. A highlight for me was sailing on the Spirit of New Zealand which was truly the most exhilarating trip of a lifetime. Achieving the GOLD Award has given me a real sense of accomplishment and pride."

What are some of his achievements while completing the Award:

Making his way though Harpers Pass for his Adventurous Journey Sam came to understand that tramping is mental stamina, as much as it is physically demanding. "You have to keep pushing yourself and not give up too easily. As a competitive swimmer my strength and fitness were good, it was the barrier in my mind I had to get past. I discovered nothing is insurmountable, and that with determination you can push past the pain of sore muscles and blisters!"

Sam's service to the community was through helping out as a Manawatu Youth Ambassador. His service was recognised locally with the Manawatu Young Achiever Award in 2015. Sam is also a founding leader of iCan an Anti-bullying Youth Group, which is a great youth initiative. You can find out more about iCan here.(Sam even designed the iCan Logo and Brand)

With the skills Sam learnt in Film Club he helped to film Fielding High School's annual EVENTO Wearable Arts show. The Film Club also projected images on screens throughout the show, which required precision timing and proficient communication between camera operators.

Well Done Sam on Achieving your Gold!
